Title IX
Reading “Changing the Title IX narrative: A prescription for change” made me realize the unfulfilled purposes of Title IX. Title Nine was meant to create equality for both me and women. While it has created equal opportunities for men and women to play sports, the media coverage of men and women’s sports are not equal. The reading about Mildred Didrickson partially shows how there are a clear split between the coverage of the two. “Babe” was arguably one of the best athletes of all time, men or women. She was an Olympic medalist in multiple events, and was also a great professional golfer. Very few men can claim to be a champion of as many sports as Babe Didrickson can. Despite all of her accomplishments, Babe Didrickson is not as well known as many male athletes. In fact, I did not know who she was until I began taking Women sport and Culture this semester. The blog also talks about how to fix this inequality. They say that the media and society need to focus on women more as athletes and not as much as just women. The main stereotype of sports are that women are not as athletic as men. Once society can get over this ideology, then media coverage of women’s sports will begin to increase.
